Fergie Smashes National Anthem

This weekend Fergie sang the national anthem during the NBA All-Star game. Although she didn’t mess up the words, she did do it in a very different style. MANY people thought it was a horrible rendition of our national song. If you haven’t seen the video yet, take a look:

Some harsh tweets included, “It sounds like Fergie is singing in the back seat of a car taking random sharp turns.”  Others were a little more blunt (and mean) “Fergie, you suck.”

One of my favorite (and creative) comparisons is from a scene in “A League of Their Own” when an intoxicated “Martha” sings “It’s Gotta Be You” to a man she met that night at the bar.

Fergie handled the criticism like a complete pro.  She said, “I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem, and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA.”  “I’m a risk-taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone.  I love this country and honestly tried my best.”

That quote, given to TMZ Sports, makes me love Fergie even more.  While she didn’t massacre all of the very difficult to hit notes, she arranged the song in a style that obviously didn’t sit well with the majority of people.  Hell, when the players are laughing while you’re singing, that’s gotta be a bad sign, right?  Steph Curry?  Right?  Jimmy Kimmel (from the crowd).

My point….Good for Fergie!  We can all learn something from this.  Not everyone is going to love what you do and if you get knocked down for trying, get back up and try again.  Just like Marla in the above video.
